Well I can honestly say that the hype surrounding this book is for once well justified. It truly is a modern and professional approach to jazz guitar instruction and is made all the more effective with the attached CD which opens up the student to a whole new dimension in music instruction. The book is very detailed in the presentation of scales, arpeggios, chords,and solos as well as the theory behind music in general and jazz music in particular. I have made great leaps in my learning because of this book. The title of the book may be slightly misleading as many of the jazz guitar styles and examples Munro draws upon come from outside of the Swing to Bebop period. One annoying drawback to the book,and it seems to be an affliction of just about every other guitar instruction book I have worked through, is the 'hip' language used by Munro, which throws him back to the era of Mel Bay. Still, if you can manage to put his sometimes stilted lingo aside, as I easily did,it is a brilliant book and I eagerly await the second volume.

Chord Melody Solos For Guitar Book/CD Set
by John E. Lawrence - $17.95
I love chord melody, but it's so difficult to fing a good book on that: this is is one of them!
Description:
The exercises and tunes in this book involve playing the chords and the melody of a song simultaneously. This book outlines six basic steps for playing guitar effectively in the chord melody style. Chord reference diagrams in major, minor, and dominant categories are provided to expand your harmonic palette. The book's exercises will acquaint you with this popular style and assist you in developing the requisite techniques. Written in standard notation and tablature.

All Blues for Jazz Guitar : Comping Styles, Chords & Grooves
by Jim Ferguson - $24.95
Very good book for every jazz guitarist. Probably the best book to start! Many progressions, many chords, many solutions... So much material! I think this is a great suggestion for your study!
Description:
This book is a very well written and organized study of jazz blues for jazz guitar students! I have found something new each time I have picked it up. The writing is clear and explains things on many levels, and the examples are not that hard to play, so you can use them pretty quickly. I find that one of the best ways to use the book is to play the examples as choruses while you are playing tunes that you know, changing the rhythms to fit the tune. Thanks to the author for giving us what must be a lifetime of experience in a compact package!
 ";
